The Faroe Islands are already, as it is, one of the most expensive countries to visit in the world – and now the North Atlantic archipelago is set to become even more expensive as a local farmer is fed up with tourists walking through the land he lends for free.

Earlier this week, Kringvarp Føroya broke the news that tenant farmer André Kruse of Saksun has decided to put a gate up across the road that leads to Saksun Beach, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Faroe Islands

In order to get past the gate, people – i.e. Faroe Islanders as well as foreign tourists – will have to pay an entry fee.

Hence, it will now cost to visit Saksun Beach.

Mr. Kruse told Kringvarp Føroya that “it is not possible to stop tourism, and thus, one has to get something out of the tourists.”

“There are so many people now, and we are forced to do something, and we have decided that the money that comes in will be used for paths and other maintenance,” said Mr. Kruse, adding that he is “planning to put up the (aforementioned) gate within a month.”

It is expected that the Saksun Beach admission fee will be about 50-75 DKK.
